So in thinking about wikis, I've been having a hard time seeing it's use in my 2nd grade classroom. As I feel apprehensive about it, I also feel excited about the possibilities. I think back to the fall when I had my 2nd graders use Microsoft Word to create a page in a non-fiction book. MANY of them were able to type with ease, and learned to navigate through Microsoft Word very quickly. Aren't the skills needed to edit a wiki similar?
I've decided to try it out with my highest reading group. We've been working on retelling fiction stories...being sure to include the characters and setting, as well as details from the beginning, middle, and end.I thought it would be great if these 6 students could take turns logging onto our class wiki and retelling the story! They can editing each others additions if necessary, and add any details they feel they should. In the end, we should have an excellent, collaborative retell! When I told them about it, they were super excited. I can't wait to see what happens when they acctually do it!

What a difference 10 days makes! Between your first thoughts about Wikis to adding one to your classroom! This sounds like a great first experience for your students.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds very cool, let us know how it goes!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with that. Its always scary when you go out on the limb for something like that! I hope for the best for you!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great way to incorporate a wiki in a primary classroom! I think I may have to "steal" the idea when I gain more confidence and decide to try it in my classroom. I can't wait to hear how it goes!!! :O)
ReplyDeleteYou can always scaffold the activity by providing practice in a template you have created for your students to work in. Think about ITSopedia. There's more thinking to do than technology skills. A well-designed page that structures their additions to the page, good use of the design process (have them write their contribution on paper first), etc.
ReplyDeleteSince Julie D. is interested, you might set up a Wiki that is shared by both classes, maybe even Leslie's 2nd graders, editing Julie D.'s 1st graders work.
